UPDATE: The 18-year-old was attacked at a technical school in Orotina. The shooter shot himself, and died Tuesday at Hospital Mexico.
A teenager shot and killed an 18-year-old student at a school before shooting himself on Monday, according to police.
Juan Pablo Salazar was shot at 9:10 a.m. at the Colegio Ricardo Castro in Orotina, a technical high school school about 60 kilometers west of San José, according to the daily La Nación. The alleged 17-year-old assailant later shot himself in the right temple. The shooter was taken to a nearby hospital by Red Cross relief workers. He was only identified by the last name Villegas because he is a minor. He was not a student of the school, authorities said.
Authorities at Hospital Mexico confirmed Villegas' death Tuesday morning due to a brain hemorrhage.
The student was shot in the school's computer room on the first day of classes after a two week summer break. Some students said the shooter entered the room and made everyone leave except the victim.
Education Minister Leonardo Garnier said via Twitter that the event was a tragedy but there is not enough information out yet to comment further on the event.
The attack comes one year after a 17-year-old student killed a principal at a private school in Heredia, north of San José.
Instructions:
1. First, you will read the new posted on the blog related to a recent event of a student who was murdered by a friend at a highschool in Orotina, Alajuela.
2. When you finish reading answer the following questions as your blog’s comment.
1. What is your perspective or opinion about this pitiful event?
2. What is your opinion about MEP’s position in regards to the security of the students in an institution? What can be some security precautions to be taken in order to feel safe on the highschool?
3. Have you ever had a reason to feel insecure in your highschool?
personally, unfortunately are facts that can only assess what happened and do everything possible to avoid recurrence. q also make students aware of what happened and prevent something like this happen again. I feel that the position of MEP is a neutral position, as most institutions do not comply with ministry safety standards, and this is not intended to ensure that they comply, but also to blame for not seeking the means to ensure that schools meet these standards. I have no Reason to feel unsafe in my school sometimes feel rather like a prison jajajaja, q feel the public or private coolegios review students should have a system to detect weapons or something like that to prevent weapons entering students to the institution and feel that school is a safe place. because, unfortunately, and no place is safe and people increasingly go unsafe.
ResponderEliminarWell, first I think the highschool will have more security when individuals enter an educational institution because that depends the security of all students in there highschool. With respect to Leonardo Garnier the minister of public education don´t care this problem because he only says “that the event was a tragedy but they don´t have more information”, for it is only one more death, and finally I never feeling insecure because when I was in the school every person who wanted enter it, have it to present a ID for safety and in the highschool is the same norm safety

This is a mockery for security in general. This event is a sign that in Costa Rica, people can do almost wathever they want... Why did de shooter have the gun?.. where did he take it from?... WHERE WERE HIS PARENTS WHEN THEY HAD TO EDUCATE HIM???...
ResponderEliminarMy opinion about MEP's position is this: MEP shoul provide some security devices to every single school, or highschool, as recording cameras, metal detectors, etc. But I think that Ministry of Interior, Police and Public Safety should be the responsable of security in educational centers. This ministry should provide as a minimum of 1 police officer per educational center, this could improve student's safety.
As Christopher said, I do not feel unsafe into highschool, instead i feel as in jail jajaja... a security guard with a gun, an area where students can not be!!... But it's better because we are safe!... I think that the main moment students feel unsafe, is when we get out the highschool, because there's not enough police officers and there's lot of lonely places where people can be attacked.

I think the highschool should have more security, they should ask for identification and ask to come and check if you have a weapon.
ResponderEliminarAnd I think that as someone that age can get a gun and that makes me think that you can now get a gun anywhere. and that violence is getting bigger, and this may worry parents and students, because they will not be able to feel safe. and I think that the MEP should be more careful of schools that are much more cautious. and now I do not know whether to feel safe at highschoolfeel safe in the highschool

i think this is a terrible accident, i think this boy called Villegas has no respect for life at all.
ResponderEliminarand I really think that this accident is a product of the bad education that is given in the rural parts of Costa Rica.
I believe the MEP has to educate more the students about thins things, and not just the students that are in rurals parts, the students that are in the central part of Costa Rica most be educated to. this tipe of accident can provoke psicologyc problems in the students.
I think this accident is really bad but is helping us to see the reality that we are living here in Costa Rica, and how the authorities have no concerned about resolved that kind of troubles. The people in the goverment should be more interesting in resolved the problems that we are living.
My personal opinion is that nothing can ever justify taking the life of another human being, especially revenge.Murder is one of the worst crimes you can commit. You're robbing someone of literally everything in a way that they can never recover. The life of another humanis indefinitely precious and it's never ok to just end that if isn't on god's will.
ResponderEliminarSchool districts are on high alert these days to the possibility of dangerous individuals creating an unsafe and possibly life-threatening situation,so the MEP should create new rules in terms of the school's security system.like metal detectors and more guards.I had never felt insecure inside the highschool, but I sure felt insecure outside..
schools are taking strong security measures for what happened in Orotina; security that was in that school was not the best because the guy just came and shot the student without thinking what he did without thinking about the consequences of this act ... MEP according to the schools must have an excellent safety because there are many people in the place of study and clarify the things that at first is that we Aestas insurance students in the institution and what it does not step in orotina true! I think the security methods in schools have to change because if the tragedies (the death of estuduante and the director) who have passed can become more serious and that would hurt a lot of public education as well as private. ResponderEliminarI think that in nowadays is imporatant to be prevented for any accident or tragedy
ResponderEliminarUnfortunately the boy died in this terrible case. But these situations are now living in public places so we as students should be prevented in every place where we. In my opinion the minister should put new preventive measures to avoid regrettable incidents this that happened a few days ago. We are all exposed to dangers such as this so it is important that all institutions are concerned about the safety of students and teachers also
It is also important that don’t go in strangers to colleges or schools because can to be dangerous. During a shooting is very common that innocent people out to cause injury or death because of people that don’t think in make and only cause damage.
I think we shouldn’t expect that to happen again what happened these days it is important to us and not allow bad people to kill others who are innocent people in these situations it is very painful for families losing their children . Allow no more innocent victims

i think that the violence is a very normal problem in our society, we see every day a lot of scenes of violence on t.v and we see as a something normal. There is many facts that can cause the violence on highschools, like the hate of jealous with our friends. Also the kids watch a lot of violence scenes on tv,videogames and movies and think that is something normal and create the idea that is fine.
ResponderEliminarThe MEP should take preventions against the violence and create programs for threat with respect the people and also not be so extrict with somethings like the uniforms and hair because that cause frustration, stress and can cause a lot of troubles on the future.
Im not feel insecure in my highschool, i feel like in a jail because we are closed all day and have identifications as a prison, that can cause problems on the students because we feel so dominates and controlated.

It's horrible the situation we are living much think that mix the personal problems and intrude on people who believe they are guilty but not, the family has a big role in the lives of everyone, also communicating how well the person feels about themselves, these tragedies have and I see no serious problems if they are not small things but now people just know how to react violently, saved everything and finally exploded causing these problems so sad, it is possible that these tragedies are given to people so young, each institution has its safety can not control all but at least one format rule of mandatory standards of safety in all institutions, for example, all institutions should have a control people entering and those leaving school. Not in our school have never felt unsafe, thank god it has good security and have never gone through a tragedy and we hope that will not happen.

this tragedy is due to the poor quality of education received in Costa Rica. The most worrying thing is that the authorities always promise that everything will get better but never happen nothing.in many schools are ridiculous safety standards that apply, there are schools in which the only thing you need to enter premises is to give the security guard our identification.
ResponderEliminarShould be checked for people who want to enter college, be checked for weapons. The authorities of this country must commit to caring for each of the students from Costa Rica , because the highest authorities live of what we pay.
I have never felt unsafe at school and I hope I never feel unsafe, but we must change our education system to avoid further tragedies.

My point of view about this unfortunate situation is worrying is that insecurity of our country that is growing every day more and more insecure we feel, we can not rest easy in any part nor in our home and our place now or in the study or work. I think that the MEP and members who are in charge of public institutions should take charge and increase safety in schools and colleges and in any institution to prevent all these types of events that threaten the lives and safety of the community. Some steps you can take are restricted passage schools, make revisions to those who pass to verify that they come with any type of weapon and badge to deliver visitors to be identified easily, as the installation of cameras to that anyone who enters the institution. I have not had reason to feel unsafe in my school all thanks to have taken adequate security measures and even more, so that we can feel safe as far as possible and that crime is impossible to go away we can only minimize it in full all that is possible.
